Close your eyes gently. Three deep, releasing breaths.

What body scan builds

Interoceptive awareness

You get sharper at reading your body's early stress signals.

Nervous-system reset

Attention + slow breath activate the vagus nerve.

Sleep bridge

A common on-ramp to sleep — attention drifts as the body softens.

Chronic pain relief

MBSR studies show reduced pain intensity and improved coping.

Where this comes from

Body scanning is the anchor practice of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn at UMass Medical School in 1979. Over 40 years of clinical research has shown consistent benefits for anxiety, chronic pain, insomnia, and treatment-resistant depression when practiced 5 or more times per week.

How to practice

  1. 1

Lie on your back or sit with your spine tall. Close your eyes softly.

  2. 2

Move attention from your toes upward, part by part, staying with each area for a few breaths.

  3. 3

You don't need to relax the area — just notice what's there (warmth, tightness, nothing).

  4. 4

When your mind wanders, gently return to where you left off. Wandering is not failure.

  5. 5

Finish by feeling the whole body at once, then open your eyes slowly.

Practice pointers

  • First few times, sit up — lying down often becomes napping.
  • If a numb or blank area appears, that's fine. Note 'no sensation' and move on.
  • Emotions may surface — let them pass through, they usually soften within a minute.
  • Consistency: 10 minutes daily beats 45 minutes once a week.

Common questions

I fall asleep every time — is that OK?+

For a sleep aid, yes. For training attention, sit up and open your eyes halfway. The awareness itself is the muscle.

I feel anxious during scanning — should I stop?+

Try shorter sessions (3–5 min), sit up, and keep eyes open. If a specific body area feels distressing, skip it and return once your comfort grows.

How is this different from PMR?+

Progressive Muscle Relaxation tenses and releases each muscle. Body scan only observes. Both help; body scan builds awareness, PMR builds physical release.
